What is Challenge Mode

How Challenge Mode changes the game

Challenge Mode was introduced with the Steam Demo on April 24, 2026 and officially announced in a Steam news post on April 25, 2026 titled 'Demo Out Now! Introducing Challenge Mode.'
Challenge Mode adds a harder difficulty level with different routing and more aggressive trap patterns. Players who memorized the standard demo layouts must adapt to new placements.
The Steam news post described it as showing 'what to expect from the new demo, and from future development of Trees Hate You,' suggesting Challenge Mode reflects the full game's design philosophy.
YouTube speedrunners have already posted Challenge Mode runs — the fastest recorded Challenge Mode speedrun is 02:16 as of April 30, 2026.
1

Forget your normal route

Challenge Mode remixes trap placements. The paths you memorized for the standard demo will get you killed. Treat each screen like you're playing for the first time — pause at every edge and watch for movement.

2

Checkpoints are more punishing

In Challenge Mode, checkpoints may not reset all hazards. Some traps respawn even after reaching a checkpoint. Always scan your surroundings before moving after a respawn.

3

The checkpoint trap is meaner

Version 18's checkpoint trap (where one checkpoint kills you on respawn) is reported to be even more aggressive in Challenge Mode, with tighter timing and additional follow-up traps after the initial one.

4

Speed is still the worst strategy

Challenge Mode rewards patience even more than the standard demo. Creators attempting speedruns on Challenge Mode report that walking — not running — is the only way to consistently survive the new trap density.

5

Audio cues are your lifeline

Challenge Mode increases trap frequency but keeps the same audio cue system. Train yourself to react to the rumble, creak, and shake sounds rather than relying on visual memory — the visual patterns are intentionally deceptive.
